unable to start PCBSD 8.0-RC amd64 graphical installer

Reported by: yuvaraj Owned by: kris
Priority: major Milestone: 8.0
Component: Installer Version: 8.0-BETA
Keywords: installer nvidia quadro Cc: trac-bugs@…, yuvaraj

Description

When I boot PCBSD 8.0-RC amd64 on my Dell Precision T5500 desktop with NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 display adapter and Hitachi HDT721032SLA360 hard disk drive, I get the following message:

FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p2 (PCBSD) # 10: Thu Jan 7 14:30:53 EST 2010

-PC-BSD is Loading... Please wait...
Detecting X Setup...
Autoconfiguring X Server... done
ERROR: Failed to start GUI Installer with detected driver... Trying VESA mode...

cp: /root/cardDetect/XF86Config - usrlocal.compat: No such file or directory
ERROR: Failed to start GUI Installer with VESA mode...
Please check your settings in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

[Press Enter to Continue]

When I pressed Enter, I was shown a text menu with Start Graphical Installer, Start Graphical Installer in VESA mode, Utilites and Reboot as options. When I selected "Start Graphical Installer" or "Start Graphical Installer in VESA mode", I was brought back to this same text menu.

Does PCBSD support NVIDIA Quadro series of display adapters yet?

Looks like the "nv" driver doesn't like your Quadro in this case. However, I did find a bug in our startup when it tries to copy the fail-safe vesa configuration over.

When you get to the test mode, can you check something? Go to utilities, then drop to the shell, and run these commands:

# cp /root/cardDetect/XF86Config.compat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# startx

What error does xorg exit with?

Here is the error I get:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (module does not exist, 0)

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support

giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "pcbsd:0" in "remove" command

Well, I've fixed the freetype error here in SVN, however that is most likely not causing the failure. We're going to be rolling 8.0-Final with the new xorg server 1.6.5 and related drivers. I'm hopeful that will correct this problem for you, since it sounds like a bug in the xorg driver stuff with your card.

Once we release the final 8.0, give this another shot and report back if it does correct this issue.

Thanks!
