I found out that the display brightness do get modified when I use the pre-defined keys in my Thinkpad T61 laptop. But the changes to the display brightness are not immediately visible in real time as expected. Instead, the changes in the display brightness becomes effective after rebooting my laptop.

That sounds like a bug in Xorg itself. I'm glad to hear that it ultimately works, but that is annoying for sure. You may want to file the bug report to them, hopefully they can address it in a future release :)

I found the GUI for configuring the Display Brightness in the following place:
KDE Start Menu --> System Settings --> Power Management --> Edit Profiles --> Screen
But, the slider for adjusting the display brightness is locked at the maximum brightness level and I am not able to move the slider to a different setting.
