#736 closed System Defect (deferred)

Crash upon shutdown, switching to console using Nvidia Optimus and Intel driver

I'm using an NVIDIA Optimus card, and upon installing PCBSD it correctly detects the card and switches to the integrated Intel. X then starts, and I can use the system normally, however if I either try and switch to the console, or shutdown the system, it immediately freezes. The crash is not just the display, but the entire OS freezes, and I have to do a hard reset. e.g. I can't even SSH into the system to try and shut it down remotely.

By laptop is a Samsung Np550P5C (http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-computers/high-performance/NP550P5C-A08UK).

I've also tried this under FreeBSD 10 current (to see if it has been fixed), after installing X and configuring it to use the Intel driver, it starts up fine, but then crashes upon switching to the console or upon shutting down.

If you need any more information, or what me to send any files from my computer then please let me know.

Hey tonywob thank you for your submission on this. Currently there is not a driver that supports switching between the Nvidia and Intel GPU's. There is a good option for most optimus enabled computers. Go into your bios and see if there is a discrete only mode for your Nvidia card. Basically you must disable the intel GPU and default only to the Nvidia GPU at this time. I am not aware when or if there is going to be a driver that will support GPU switching so I will close this and set it as deferred. Thanks again!
