#748 closed System Defect (fixed)

Slow boot - GRUB Takes 20 minutes to boot

Reported by: lordthrasher Owned by: Kris
Priority: critical Milestone:
Component: System Configuration Version: 9.2-RELEASE
Keywords: grub, boot, slow, slow boot, loader, install, 9.2 release Cc: trac-bugs@…

Description

I installed PC-BSD 9.2 via the DVD .iso on the official site after resizing my Windows 7 partition to make room. Even though I'd had no issues at all with 9.1, and no warning during install except that 20 gigs was less room than it would like, when I boot up, the system prints "loading GRBU" and "Welcome to GRUB !" and hangs for 10 minutes before clearing the screen, hangs another 10+ minutes and finally loads PC-BSD properly.

When it's running, the OS seems just fine. Everything displays properly, it updated to RC3, I've installed and played with applications, etc.

Installed PCBSD9.2-RELEASE-x64-DVD-latest.iso from http://www.pcbsd.org/en/download.html last night.

System specs are 2 gig RAM, 64 bit processor, 20 gig second partition for BSD, 140 gig for Windows.

Make sure that the freetype module is loaded. If it is not, add the following
line to the "Modules" section of your X Windows configuration file:

Load "freetype"

Add the following line to the "Files" section of X Windows configuration file:

FontPath? "/usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/dejavu/"

Note: your X Windows configuration file is typically /etc/X11/XF86Config
if you are using XFree86, and /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you are using X.Org.
====
Note that some of the standard modules are provided as separate
ports since they require extra dependencies:

bsddb databases/py-bsddb
gdbm databases/py-gdbm
sqlite3 databases/py-sqlite3
tkinter x11-toolkits/py-tkinter

Install them as needed.

2) /usr/local/share/sgml/catalog.ports

This catalog is for handling SGML stuff installed under
/usr/local/share/sgml. It is changed by ports/packages.

3) /usr/local/share/xml/catalog

The top level catalog for XML stuff. It is not changed
by any ports/packages except textproc/xmlcatmgr.

4) /usr/local/share/xml/catalog.ports

This catalog is for handling XML stuff installed under
/usr/local/share/xml. It is changed by ports/packages.

You installed xterm with wide chars support. This introduces some limitations
comparing to the plain single chars version: this version of xterm will use
UTF-8 charset for selection buffers, breaking 8-bit copy/paste support unless
you are using UTF-8 or ISO8859-1 locale. If you want 8-bit charset selections to
work as before, use "eightBitSelectTypes" XTerm resource setting.

For further information refer to the SELECT/PASTE section of xterm(1) manual
page.
================================================================================
Since FreeBSD has new USB stack, freeglut normally doesn't build on FreeBSD 8
(yet). To workaround this a small patch adds one include file and comments out
content of one function (only leaves return NULL).

This might cause side effects. Joysticks do not work, and there might be ports
that do not compile or applications that crash because of this.

Do not hesitate to contact x11@… if there are any issues and side
effects because of this.

Qt 4 can be built with optional support for:

  • Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) (enabled by default)
  • Network Audio System (NAS)
  • Qt style that renders using GTK (QGTKSTYLE)

In order to enable them, you have to add

QT4_OPTIONS= CUPS NAS QGTKSTYLE

to your /etc/make.conf and compile devel/qt4-corelib and
x11-toolkits/qt4-gui ports.

Attention! Whenever you change the QT4_OPTIONS both
devel/qt4-corelib and x11-toolkits/qt4-gui ports must be rebuilt!

Qt paint engine makes common use of shared memory. To avoid MIT-SHM
errors (i.e., blank windows), you probably need to raise shared memory
limits in loader.conf(5). The following should be safe values for the
KDE Plasma Desktop:

kern.ipc.shmall=32768
kern.ipc.shmmni=1024
kern.ipc.shmseg=1024

======================================================================
This software is based in part on the work of the FreeType? Team.
See <URL:http://www.freetype.org/>.

Installation of the Linux base system is finished. The Linux kernel
mode, which must be enabled for Linux binaries to run, is now
enabled. Linux mode can be enabled permanently with the linux_enable
variable of rc.conf(5).

If you want to use shared memory in Linux applications, you need to set up
a link from /dev/shm to a suitable place, e.g. by adding the following line
to /etc/devfs.conf (takes effect on each boot):

link /tmp shm

To make use of NIS you have to adjust yp.conf and nsswitch.conf in
/compat/linux/etc/ accordingly. For example:

Set your yp-server and yp-domainname in yp.conf:

domainname my.yp.domainname
ypserver my.yp.server

Let your lists for hosts, passwd and group be resolved via nsswitch.conf:

passwd: files nis
shadow: files nis
group: files nis
hosts: files dns nis

WARNING: doing work which needs to chroot into the linux base may not work.
In such cases (e.g. cross-development) you are better suited with a linux_dist
port.
===============================================================================

Gamin will only provide realtime notification of changes for at most n files,
where n is the minimum value between (kern.maxfiles * 0.7) and
(kern.maxfilesperproc - 200). Beyond that limit, files will be polled.

If you often open several large folders with Nautilus, you might want to
increase the kern.maxfiles tunable (you do not need to set
kern.maxfilesperproc, since it is computed at boot time from kern.maxfiles).

For a typical desktop, add the following line to /boot/loader.conf, then
reboot the system:

kern.maxfiles="25000"

The behavior of gamin can be controlled via the various gaminrc files.
See http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/config.html on how to create
these files. In particular, if you find gam_server is taking up too much
CPU time polling for changes, something like the following may help
in one of the gaminrc files:

# reduce polling frequency to once per 10 seconds
# for UFS file systems in order to lower CPU load
fsset ufs poll 10

The ESounD daemon (esd) must be started on a per-user basis. This is typically
done by the Session Manager in GNOME. However, if you are not using the
GNOME Desktop, you will need to add something like the following to your
X Windows initialization script:

esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2

The OpenLDAP client package has been successfully installed.

Edit

/usr/local/etc/openldap/ldap.conf

Try `man ldap.conf' and visit the OpenLDAP FAQ-O-Matic at

http://www.OpenLDAP.org/faq/index.cgi?file=3

for more information.

GDM is installed.

Do _NOT_ use /etc/ttys to start gdm at boot time. This will result in gdm
hanging or restarting constantly. Instead, add gdm_enable="YES" to
/etc/rc.conf. GDM will be started automatic on the next reboot.
IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: You may not use these fonts if you do not agree to
the terms of the Microsoft End-User License Agreement ("EULA"). You will find
the EULA at /usr/local/share/doc/webfonts/LICENSE. If you read and agree
to the EULA, you can start using the fonts by following these instructions:

Make sure that the freetype module is loaded. If it is not, add the following

Load "freetype"

Add the following line to the "Files" section of xorg.conf or XF86Config:

To use uhidd daemon for USB HID devices, depends on which sub class
driver you want to attach, to avoid confilicts between the daemon and
the kernel drivers, you should either use the command line option '-u'
to instruct the daemon to detach active kernel drivers attached to
a device, or you should remove some of those entries 'device ums',
'device ukbd', or 'device uhid' from your kernel config file and
recompile the kernel.

Note that if the USB kernel drivers are compiled as kernel modules,
you should also remove the relevant devd(8) rules in /etc/devd/usb.conf
config file, so those modules will not be loaded automatically by devd(8)
when devices are attached.

If you want to run uhidd deamon at the startup, add the following lines to
/etc/rc.conf:

uhidd_flags="-kmohsu"
uhidd_enable="YES"

Note that you need to modify the uhidd_flags (command line options)
according to which sub class drivers you want to use.

To manually start/stop uhidd daemon on certain device, run:

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/uhidd [start|stop] /dev/ugen.X.Y

See http://wiki.FreeBSD.org/uhidd for more details about how to install and
setup the daemon.

smartmontools has been installed

To check the status of drives, use the following:

/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ad0 for first ATA/SATA drive
/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/da0 for first SCSI drive
/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ada0 for first SATA drive

To include drive health information in your daily status reports,
add a line like the following to /etc/periodic.conf:

daily_status_smart_devices="/dev/ad0 /dev/da0"

substituting the appropriate device names for your SMART-capable disks.

To enable drive monitoring, you can use /usr/local/sbin/smartd.
A sample configuration file has been installed as
/usr/local/etc/smartd.conf.sample
Copy this file to /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf and edit appropriately

To have smartd start at boot

echo 'smartd_enable="YES"' >> /etc/rc.conf

To install GRUB on the master boot record of your hard drive
use 'grub-install <drive-to-install>' command.

A typical menu entry in /boot/grub/grub.cfg for FreeBSD:
menuentry "FreeBSD" {

set root="(hd0,msdos1,bsd1)"
kfreebsd /boot/loader

}
Or use grub-mkconfig to create the config file.
#############################################################
Install the fuse kernel module to use this port.
==============================================================================

In order to automatically load the fuse module on startup, you need to:

  • Add fusefs_enable="YES" to your /etc/rc.conf.
  • Run "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/fusefs start" (for the first time).

Set "sysctl vfs.usermount=1" if you want to be able to mount fuse devices as
an ordinary user.

Now fuse filesystems (sysutils/fusefs-*) can be mounted at startup from
/etc/fstab with the "late" parameter. This requires a symlink in /usr/sbin
named "mount_<fstype>", which is not created by all the fusefs ports.

Note that the rc.d script will unmount all fuse filesystems when called with
"stop" (in reverse order in case of nested mounts), so it can unload the
kernel module.

Note: The location of the cdrtools `defaults' files has been set to

/usr/local/etc

This is the FreeBSD ports standard config file location, NOT the cdrtools
standard location, which is /etc/default.

The reason for this is that FreeBSD ports and packages should not use
configuration files outside of /usr/local.

After installation, you need to edit the ossec.conf file to reflect
the correct settings for your environment. All the files related
to ossec-hids have been installed in /usr/local/ossec-hids and
its subdirectories.

For information on proper configuration, see http://www.ossec.net/.

To enable the startup script, add ossechids_enable="YES" to
/etc/rc.conf. To enable database output, execute:

/usr/local/ossec-hids/bin/ossec-control enable database

Then check this documentation:

http://www.ossec.net/doc/manual/output/database-output.html

When you deinstall this port after starting the daemons once, many
directories that are created by the daemons will remain. To fully
remove the port you need to delete those directories manually. To
further enhance the security on your system, you may also enable
some checks in PAM for a fast reaction against intrusions.

To enable printing with local printer you need to give group 'cups'
r/w access to printer device:

1) Add following to /etc/devfs.rules (create if it doesn't exist):

[system=10]
# FreeBSD 7.x
add path 'unlpt*' mode 0660 group cups
add path 'ulpt*' mode 0660 group cups
add path 'lpt*' mode 0660 group cups
# FreeBSD 8.x
add path 'usb*' mode 0770 group cups
add path 'ugen*' mode 0660 group cups

2) And following to /etc/rc.conf:

devfs_system_ruleset="system"

3) Restart devfs: /etc/rc.d/devfs restart

If your system supports 'devd' you can copy
$PREFIX/share/examples/cups/ulpt-cupsd.conf to $PREFIX/etc/devd/

To enable printing under Gimp and MS-Windows clients do the following:

1) Uncomment application/octet-stream line in mime.types
2) Uncomment application/octet-stream line in mime.convs
3) Restart cupsd

If you are using libusb, it is important that no device driver, e.g.
ulpt(4) is attached to the device you wish to use. In this case please
ensure the cups user and group has read/write access to /dev/ugen*

If you are using a USB printer wtih FreeBSD 8.0 or later, you will
need to find the proper /dev/usb/* device pointed at by the /dev/ugen*
entry. Follow the instructions for devfs.rules as above, but append a
rule similar to the following for a printer attached as /dev/ugen0.2:

add path 'usb/0.2.*' mode 0660 group cups

Installation of the color profile for color printers:

Color printers needs color profile files to get better results. These

files are provided by your printer manufacturer and you have to install them
manually. To do that, download the linux official drivers and locate the "cms"
directory. Install them with the command:

# make installcms CMSDIR=/path/to/cms/directory \

MANUFACTURER=samsung or xerox or dell

Samsung color profile files are available at:

(Then use MANUFACTURER=samsung)

http://splix.ap2c.org/samsung_cms.tar.bz2

Note: in order to use the script "dvipdf", dvips must be installed.
This program may be provided by either print/dvips or print/dvipsk-tetex
(print/dvipsk-tetex may be preferable since it doesn't conflict with
tetex things).

FAPIfontmap and FAPIcidfmap in /usr/local/share/ghostscript/9.06/Resource/Init
have to be configured if you want to use FAPI feature.

smb://username:password@server/printer
smb://username:password@workgroup/server/printer

But a CUPS article describes another syntax,
so beware.

ibus-anthy installation finished. To use ibus-anthy, please do the following:

If you are using bash or zsh, please add following lines to your $HOME/.bashrc or
$HOME/.zshrc:

export XIM=ibus
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=xim
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export XIM_PROGRAM="ibus-daemon"
export XIM_ARGS="-r --daemonize --xim"

If you are using tcsh, please add following lines to your $HOME/.cshrc:

setenv XIM ibus
setenv GTK_IM_MODULE ibus
setenv QT_IM_MODULE xim
setenv XMODIFIERS @im=ibus
setenv XIM_PROGRAM ibus-daemon
setenv XIM_ARGS "-r --daemonize --xim"

If you are using KDE4, you may create a shell script in $HOME/.kde4/env,
and add following lines:

#!/bin/sh
export XIM=ibus
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=xim
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export XIM_PROGRAM="ibus-daemon"
export XIM_ARGS="-r --daemonize --xim"

If ibus cannot start or the panel does not appear, please ensure
that you are using up-to-date python.
There's a bug in python 2.5, which may prevent the panel from appearing.
==================================================================

saned will log to the 'daemon' facility; this is a hard-coded
default. Also, saned has no support for SSL/TLS or cryptographic
authentication; you may wish to deploy security/stunnel to wrap
it if you have concerns about security.

If you are using a USB scanner, you should create
/usr/local/etc/devd/saned.conf to allow saned access permissions.
Currently, devfs.rules(5) has no support for USB specific filters
such as vendor, product and serial number.

Here is an example saned.conf for an Epson CX3650
multi-function scanner/printer device (assuming you are sharing
the printer function with cups):

notify 100 {

match "system" "USB";
match "subsystem" "INTERFACE";
match "type" "ATTACH";
match "cdev" "ugen[0-9].[0-9]";
match "vendor" "0x04b8";
match "product" "0x080e";
action "chown -L cups:saned /dev/$cdev && chmod -L 660 /dev/$cdev";

};

To determine which port your scanner is connected to, inspect the
output of 'usbconfig list' before and after connecting your scanner,
and note the numbers which appear after 'ugen' in the first column.
Then, use 'usbconfig -d X.Y dump_device_desc' to learn the idVendor
and idProduct fields, and plug them into the above example entry.

Finally, restart devd with the command:

# /etc/rc.d/devd restart

Please take /usr/local/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
as an example only; you may wish to enable only the 'net' backend
on client machines; be sure to point it at your scan server.

If you are setting up a scan server, you may also wish to edit
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/saned.conf
to only permit specific machines.

You'll have to install databases/virtuoso to use Soprano's Virtuoso
backend.

Due to severe instability, the Solid UPnP backend was disabled. Thus,
you will not get notifications about networked shares in the device
notifier. The UPnP functionality can be re-enabled by setting the
SOLID_UPNP environment variable:

$ cat > ~/.kde4/env/upnp.sh << EOF
SOLID_UPNP=1
export SOLID_UPNP
EOF
$ chmod +x ~/.kde4/env/upnp.sh

======================================================================

You can use sasldb2 for authentication, to add users use:

saslpasswd2 -c username

If you want to enable SMTP AUTH with the system Sendmail, read
Sendmail.README

NOTE: This port has been compiled with a default pwcheck_method of

auxprop. If you want to authenticate your user by /etc/passwd,
PAM or LDAP, install ports/security/cyrus-sasl2-saslauthd and
set sasl_pwcheck_method to saslauthd after installing the
Cyrus-IMAPd 2.X port. You should also check the
/usr/local/lib/sasl2/*.conf files for the correct
pwcheck_method.

You have built the Boost library with thread support.

Don't forget to add -pthread to your linker options when
linking your code.

Remember to run mysql_upgrade the first time you start the MySQL server
after an upgrade from an earlier version.

===========================================================

To use Ruby bindings outside KDE session set RUBYLIB
environment variable:

RUBYLIB=/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9:/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9/amd64-freebsd9

See "man 1 ruby" for details.

===========================================================
======================================================================

To enable KDE Display Manager (KDM), add kdm4_enable="YES" to
rc.conf(5). To get full functionality you also need procfs(5) mounted.

If sysutils/upower is installed, backlight management support requires
acpi_video(4) to be loaded.

======================================================================
Make sure that your floppy disk is not mounted. KFloppy cannot format
a mounted floppy disk.
Notes for FreeBSD 7.x and onwards users:

  1. The FreeBSD k3b port supports SCSI drives only. If you have IDE CD or DVD drives, use them through the cam system. See Chapter 18.6.9 of the handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/creating-cds.html#ATAPICAM)
  2. k3b has to be started from a root console, which is not recommended. Alternatively, do ALL of the following:
    1. Set the suid flag on cdrecord and cdrdao. The 'Notes' chapter of 'man cdrecord' discusses this.
    2. Set the vfs.usermount sysctl variable to 1.

# sysctl vfs.usermount=1

Add the line vfs.usermount=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf
Note that this has negative security implications

  1. Every user must have read and write access to /dev/cdX:
    • add to your /etc/devfs.rules under '[system=10]':

add path 'cd*' mode 666

  • or if you prefer allow access for a group XXX only add instead:

add path 'cd*' mode 660 group XXX

  • to enable it, add to your /etc/rc.conf a

devfs_system_ruleset="system"

  1. Every user who should be able to use k3b must have read and write access to all pass through devices connected with CD and DVD drives and to the /dev/xpt0 device. Run 'camcontrol devlist' to identify those devices (seek string 'passX' at the end of each line). Note, that this is a security leak as well but that there is no alternative!
    • add to your /etc/devfs.rules under '[system=10]':

add path 'pass*' mode 666
add path 'xpt0' mode 666

  • or if you prefer allow access for a group XXX only add instead:

add path 'pass*' mode 660 group XXX
add path 'xpt0' mode 660 group XXX

  • to enable it, add to your /etc/rc.conf

devfs_system_ruleset="system"

  • to apply these changes without reboot, run as root:

/etc/rc.d/devfs restart

  1. Check, that DMA is activated for atapi devices: 'sysctl hw.ata.atapi_dma' If not, set it to 1 and put 'hw.ata.atapi_dma=1' into /boot/loader.conf.
  2. Create a directory on a partition, which has enough disk space to hold a CDs or DVDs content (usually below /usr). Enter this directory in Settings-> Configure K3b...->Misc.

This port does not contain any FreeBSD device drivers for infrared
devices. This port installs the LIRC daemons and tools for interacting
with drivers that support the LIRC device interface.

You will need to obtain third party device drivers or port the Linux
drivers in ${WRKSRC}/drivers to use the LIRC port.

Update for 0.9: Known working with this update are FTDI-based USB
IR receivers/transmitters like described here,

http://www.huitsing.nl/irftdi/

and if you use the recent multimedia/webcamd port then MCE USB based
ones driven by the Linux mceusb driver as well remotes coming with
USB DVB tuners that by default work with the Linux drivers used in
webcamd should also work, i.e. if webcamd creates a /dev/lircX
device node check if e.g.

mode2 -d /dev/lirc0

reports pulses and spaces when triggering the remote at the receiver,
if it does you probably will be able to use lirc.

Some other userland drivers will probably also work (like others
using libusb), they just were not tested.

The lirc documentation should be accessible at:

/usr/local/share/doc/lirc/html/index.html

Some example configs should have been installed here:

/usr/local/share/examples/lirc/remotes

The port now installs an example lircd.conf that's preconfigured
for use with webcamd, either with USB DVB tuner remotes supported
by the Linux drivers by default that webcamd uses, or for remotes
supplied with MCE USB IR receivers. If you want to create a config
for a different remote using an IR receiver that works with mode2
you can try using irrecord like described here:

file:///usr/local/share/doc/lirc/html/help.html#new_remote

Update for webcamd >= 3.0.0.1:

webcamd 3.0.0.1 now supports /dev/input/eventX (X there can be for
example 0, 8, 16 etc) and uses it exclusively for almost all tuners,
only mceusb IR-only devices now support both interfaces. So if you
don't get a /dev/lircX device node anymore and want to make lirc
use a remote with such a tuner you now need the lirc devinput driver,
if you start lircd via the rc.d script set lircd_flags and lircd_device
in rc.conf(5), like:

lircd_flags="-H devinput"
lircd_device="/dev/input/event0"

The example lircd.conf includes the devinput config file too so if
all goes well irw(1) should still work with such tuners and show
buttons pressed, and if not and the tuner's Linux driver uses the
rc.core interface you can often still add a custom keymap, only
with devinput you no longer want to use irrecord(1) but ir-keytable(1)
which is part of the multimedia/v4l-utils port. Using that tool
you can e.g. check remote events coming in on /dev/input/eventX,

ir-keytable -d /dev/input/eventX -t

list the current keytable,

ir-keytable -d /dev/input/eventX -r

or add scancodes on the fly by loading a custom keymap,

ir-keytable -d /dev/input/eventX -w keymap.txt

(on Linux this can be automated using udev, don't know if we need
something like that also...) Some (Linux-centric, so not all of
them apply) notes re ir-keytable(1) and the lirc devinput change
are also here:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=101151

This OpenJDK implementation requires fdescfs(5) mounted on /dev/fd and
procfs(5) mounted on /proc.

If you have not done it yet, please do the following:

mount -t fdescfs fdesc /dev/fd
mount -t procfs proc /proc

To make it permanent, you need the following lines in /etc/fstab:

fdesc /dev/fd fdescfs rw 0 0
proc /proc procfs rw 0 0

To be able to play audio and video streams with Phonon-GStreamer,
you'll need to have the appropriate GStreamer plugins installed.
multimedia/gstreamer-plugins-core will install a standard set, while
multimedia/gstreamer-plugins-all will let you choose among all of
them.

======================================================================
======================================================================

In order to use certain devices (MTP, iPod...) with Amarok you need to
be able to mount USB devices as the user running Amarok. If HAL
automount doesn't work, read more on how to set this up on FreeBSD
here:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/usb-disks.html

If you are not running a full KDE workspace, you should consider
installing a Phonon backend (multimedia/phonon-gstreamer or
multimedia/phonon-vlc) to get audio playback.

To use these drivers, make sure that you have loaded the NVidia kernel
module, by doing

# kldload nvidia

or adding

nvidia_load="YES"

to your /boot/loader.conf.

If you build this port with FreeBSD AGP GART driver, make sure you have
agp.ko kernel module installed and loaded, since nvidia.ko will depend
on it, or have your kernel compiled with "device agp". Otherwise, the
NVidia kernel module will not load. Also, please set correct value for
Option "NvAGP" in Device section of your X11 configuration file.

When building with Linux compatibility support, make sure that linux.ko
module is available as well (or have it compiled in kernel). It can be
loaded via /boot/loader.conf, or later in the boot process if you add

linux_enable="YES"

to your /etc/rc.conf.

If X.org cannot start and reports

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to obtain a shared memory identifier.

in /var/log/Xorg.0.log while actually you have options SYSVSHM
enabled in kernel, the sysctl kern.ipc.shmall
should be increased.

See /usr/local/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for more information.

Does GRUB have any log file to check what does it take so long?

I can confirm this issue, and have a bit more data.

I have hit this with both 9.2 and 10.X of PCBSD.

This issue only hits when booting from the harddrive(on my setup anyways). The grub on the USB key (dd the USB/ISO file) boots within nominal time limits.

Once PCBSD has been installed though, i hit the same issue(total boot time for me is only like 5 minutes though, not 20).

But, since i'm kinda insane, i decided i wanted to dualboot Debian from the same zpool as PCBSD. Installed debian, fought a bit with it, got it to boot properly. And then i installed the ZFS On Linux grub from debian.

The ZOL grub from Debian installed in the harddrive again booted within nominal time limits. I have since(for various reasons) re-installed grub from PC-BSD, and it is now back to ~5 min boot time.

During all this, i've made quite a few broken installs of grub, and had to fight my way through the "grub repair" stuff.

When i'm in grub repair i do the following:

set prefix=(hd0,msdos3)/pcbsd10/@/boot/grub
insmod normal
normal

The "insmod normal" command takes about a minute to load(as does the normal command). To me it clearly looks like any and all harddisk access is slow. For some reason.

I've trimmed my grub.cfg file quite a lot, removing fonts, graphics, etc. To make the wait time smaller. And it quite clearly works. For some reason data transfer from the harddisk is extremely slow.

NOTE: Boot grub from the pc-bsd install disk, and doing a "configfile (hd0,msdos3)/pcbsd10/@/boot/grub" does NOT have any speed penalty. So while i feel certain that this issue has something to do with slow reads from disk(i guess it could be slow write to ram), the issue clearly happens early in the grub boot process, since the issue isn't hit when booting from external media.

I'm not sure specifically what is different(in the code) between the grub i got from ZOL, and the one i got from PCBSD.

If something relevant appears(possible patch, something that should be bisected) i'd be more than willing to to test it out.

Another note, i've used the same usb key(that is, same release) on 3 different computers. One of them has this issue(A Dell machine), One of them can't boot properly(2012 macbook air, different issues(s)) and the last one (ooooold white macbook) boots fine with PCBSD grub.

Sincerely
TobiasTheViking?

Oh, also, all of the following commands specifically gives long load times:

kfreebsd

kfreebsd_module

kfreebsd_module_elf (Depending on module size).

So cutting down on the freebsd kernel modules loaded by grub will also make the boot faster.

Not a solution, but worth doing while the bug persists.

Setting the kFreeBSD.vfs parameter takes no time at all, even with slow grub.

Can you test these two files:

# fetch -o /usr/local/etc/grub.d/00_header https://github.com/pcbsd/pcbsd/raw/master/src-sh/pc-extractoverlay/ports-overlay/usr/local/etc/grub.d/00_header

# fetch -o /usr/local/etc/grub.d/10_ktrueos https://github.com/pcbsd/pcbsd/raw/master/src-sh/pc-extractoverlay/ports-overlay/usr/local/etc/grub.d/10_ktrueos

# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

I did some cleanup which *may* help a bit with the load times. Let me know if it makes any noticeable difference on your system.

I'll do a clean install and compare times with those new files, by sunday evening(CET) at the latest.

But this is, at best, a band-aid, is it even worth the trouble on your part?

I'm not sure its a band-aid, the scripts were doing some silly stuff like trying to query for the root device multiple times, which if they each take a while may really slow you down. In addition for each BE, it was doing another scan and trying to hit floppy disks also, which can hang the box a while.
