#355 closed System Defect (fixed)

system freezes shortly after startup

Reported by: ashumaloz Owned by:
Priority: critical Milestone: 8.2
Component: System Configuration Version:
Keywords: system crash Cc: trac-bugs@…

My computer is a Dell Demension E310. On 8.2 RC1, the desktop crashes a few seconds after it finishes loading. The clock is frozen and I can't do anything except push the off button on my computer. I have tried booting in safe mode, but I get the same result.
I had this problem with 8.1 as well, but with that release I was able to solve it by booting in safe mode and then shutting down properly.

What video adapter is in this system? Also have you tried the option to run in VESA mode? Its possible KDE is trying to enable 3d effects and causing the crash.

I was able to solve the problems I was having under 8.1 with your VESA suggestion. I set the video card to Intel, instead of Intel 3d, booted under VESA option, and then once KDE started, I disabled the 3-d effects. I can now leave it on for a long period of time without it crashing.
I think that this would work under 8.2, but my DVD drive wanted to stop working when I was trying to re-install it.
It's strange that my computer has no problems with Compiz, the moving cube, wiggly windows, etc. under GNOME, but under KDE my computer hates them.
I bought this used online, so I don't konw the video adapter.

I got 8.2 RC1 working perfectly. You were right; it was the KDE 3d effects that caused the crash. I booted in safe/VESA mode, disabled 3D effects and the indexer, and then restarted. After restart, everything worked with fine with normal configuration.
I would recommend having 3D effects OFF by default. I can not be the only person whose video card has a problem with this, and people will be put off by PC-BSD if their first experience is that of a system freeze.
