#780 closed System Defect (3rdpartybug)

Flash Player will not work in many browsers after 9.2 upgrade / fresh install

Reported by: joshms Owned by: kris
Priority: critical Milestone: 9.2
Component: System Configuration Version: 9.2-RELEASE
Keywords: Cc: trac-bugs@…

Description

Users on PC-BSD forums and the testing mailing list are reporting that browsers are saying that flash is not installed on version 9.2. Please investigate and see if we can revert / replace the necessary package(s) as they were working in 9.1. This bug has been confirmed on a PC-BSD dev test machine as well although it is intermittent. I would say approximately 75% of the time it does not work, but there have been instances where it did work only to not work a few minutes later. If you are having this problem please add to this ticket the output of uname -a and also brief hardware specs including your graphic chipset.

In 9.1 with all updates except the FreeBSD security update, I am encountering this error in Firefox but not with other web browsers like Konqueror, Chromium, Rekonq, etc:

"In The Adobe Flash Player or an HTML5 supported browser is required for video playback.
Get the latest Flash Player
Learn more about upgrading to an HTML5 browser"

I do not why this happens only on Firefox on my system while other web browsers are working fine.

Ok, it looks like maybe this is because the flash-plugin wrapper is out of date? Try this, close firefox and run "flashpluginctl off && flashpluginctl on" as your user account. Then reopen firefox, does it work now?

Same error after I closed firefox, did "flashpluginctl off && flashpluginctl on" command, reopened firefox and played youtube videos:

The Adobe Flash Player or an HTML5 supported browser is required for video playback.

Ok, I did some looking into this. The standalone Flash plugin for Linux/BSD is no longer being updated by Adobe, so any videos / flash which require a version newer than 11.2 will not work with the old plugin.

(Take a look at the Linux section)
https://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/whitepapers/roadmap.html

The good news is that Chrome uses a newer plugin format and should be able to play that newer flash content. Hopefully FireFox? will do the same in a future version.

(BTW, if you click the HTML5 link on youtube and enable the HTML5 beta program, most videos will play again)
